Change of Character (CHoCH) is the first sign that the market trend may be reversing. In an uptrend, a CHoCH forms when price breaks below the most recent swing low for the first time — suggesting bearish momentum is entering. It is the opposite of a BOS and signals a potential trend change rather than continuation. CHoCH alone is not enough to enter a trade — it is a warning signal.
How to Trade CHoCH
Traders use CHoCH to shift their bias. After a bearish CHoCH in an uptrend, stop looking for longs and start monitoring for a bearish BOS to confirm the reversal. The first bearish BOS after a CHoCH is the confirmation. Then look for short entries on pullbacks into bearish OBs or FVGs. CHoCH on higher timeframes (H4, Daily) is significantly more powerful than on lower timeframes.
Real Example — XAUUSD
Example: Gold has been making higher highs and higher lows. Suddenly price breaks below the last higher low at 3290.00 — this CHoCH warns that the uptrend may be over. Switch bias to bearish. Wait for a bearish BOS below the next swing low before entering short.
